Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick in Gabrielle

16 September 2013

A lot of you already know that I recently won a Chanel lipstick from The Misty Mom's giveaway a couple of weeks ago. It is absolutely one of the highlights of my entire blogging experience. I think I spent a good amount of time jumping up and down around my room when it was announced on her blog. I was so so grateful. Shari The Misty Mom, and Mari of Beloved 7 Shop, who was also a part of the giveaway were kind enough to let me choose what lipstick color I wanted. And this is it ladies and gentlemen, behold my first ever Chanel Red Lipstick.

"A modern interpretation of classic creme lip colour as an homage to the rich life and legacy of 'Coco' Chanel. Lightweight lip colour glides on for easy application, and features a Hydratendre complex to help soften, soothe and condition lips - even boosting their ability to hold in moisture - for a plumper, smoother and healthier-looking appearance. A range of wearable shades with full-coverage finishes, from matte to pearl to soft shimmer." - Chanel

PACKAGING. As always, I am a fan of Chanel's simple but elegant packaging. A sleek black case with gold details is a safe design and yet I highly appreciate it. The actual lipstick has the word Chanel embossed on it. I wasn't able to snap a good photo of that part so I didn't include one. The product has a nice light floral scent to it, very similar to the Chanel pressed powder that I have. It is not a strong scent, in fact you won't really notice it unless you move the product very close to your nose.

COLOR & TEXTURE. The color is absolutely divine. It's a gorgeous, sultry, bright red color that has a slight shimmer to it. My lips are full and I usually do not like applying a lot of shimmer or gloss to them because it can make them look a lot bigger. But this somehow worked for me. It is pigmented but you can build up the color into a shade that you prefer.

The texture is very smooth and creamy. It glides smoothly on your lips when you apply it and immediately make them feel moisturized. I usually condition my lips with lip balm before I apply any lipstick, but you do not need it with this lipstick. However, this product does highlight dry skin on your lips so make sure to properly smoothen them out with lip scrub before application.

APPLICATION. Because of its bold red color and high pigmentation slight imperfections in application can be very noticable. You definitely need a lip pencil liner to smoothen out the edges and corners of your lips. This is also the time where a tiny lip brush can come in handy.

I didn't use any lip liner in the pictures I have here, as you can see the edges are quite imperfect. It bothers me a lot and, surprisingly, bothers my boyfriend even more. Every time he looks at me and sees any imperfections or color transfer on my teeth he points it out. It's like I have my own personal lip watcher every time I am with him.

LONGEVITY. One of the reasons why I waited a few weeks to write a review on it is to test the longevity of the product on different occasions. This lipstick can last for up to around three to four hours on me with out me wanting to retouch it. Which, I must say, I am a little disappointed in. After four hours the color gradually fades a bit. Even as it fades you can still get away with the red stain that it leaves on your lips. However, since the color is at its best when its not faded you are going to want to keep retouching it over the day. As for if it will survive meals and drinks. I'm going to discuss it with its transfer issues.

TRANSFER ISSUES. Yup, unfortunately it does have a downside like most creamy lipsticks have. The only thing that I didn't really like about this product is it has major transfer issues. Bad enough that I do not prefer wearing this if I know that I am going to have to eat messy food. The second time I used this lipstick I had to eat a taco. After a few bites, red stains were all over my food. Very unpleasant. And the color on my lips became unforgivably messy. When it comes to eating simpler foods, the stains may not transfer easily to your food but you definitely need to retouch afterwards because the color will fade from your lips. If the lipstick is not properly applied it can also leave stains on your teeth.

Even with the transfer issues I still love this lipstick. The color with its slight shimmer is too beautiful not to love. The texture is amazingly moisturizing. However, because it doesn't last very long, it can get messy when you eat food, and it can transfer to your teeth easily, I would need to pick the days where I want to wear this lipstick. I would probably not wear it on a regular everyday basis but it can be great for events and days where in you are more careful and have a lot of time to check your make up and retouch.
